His eminence Archbishop of Joppa, Damaskinos (in the world Anastasios ) Gaganiaras, was born in Vlasti of Kozani in 1952. He came to Jerusalem in 1967.
He was tonsured Monk in 1968. In 1970 he was anointed Deacon serving in Jerusalem, Nazareth and Amman. In 1977 he was anointed Priest and received the office of Archimandrite in 1980.

University of Bethlehem. In 1984 he received his degree in Theology from the University of Thessaloniki. In 1985 having studied Byzantine History at the Post-graduate
Department of the University of Thessaloniki, he received his post-graduate degree cum laude (with distinction). In 1986 he graduated with a Doctorate Degree in Theology from the same University. He is also a graduate of the School of Law at the Aristotelian University.
He served as candle keeper at the Most Holy Church of the Resurrection and sacristan at Bethlehem.
In 1994 he renovated at his own expense the Holy Church of the Archangels in Joppa and the Holy Monastery there. In 2001 he renovated and started operating the School of Joppa.
In 1996 he was nominated member of the Holy and Sacred Synod. In October of 1998 he was elected and on the 13/10/1998 he was anointed Bishop of Joppa. In 2000 he was advanced to Archbishop of Joppa and was appointed President of the Ecclesiastic Court of Joppa.
In 2001 he was appointed Exarch of the Most Holy Sepulchre in Greece and in 2002 Exarch of America. In 2008 he graduated with a Doctorate Degree in Law School at the Aristotelian University, submitting a dissertation titled: “The structural organization of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem”. |
